about

STORY:
Paul now enters Athens,
where he openly witnesses to
the Gentile and Jewish scholars
gathered on Mars Hill
at The Areopagus.

“He reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: ‘People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:
TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. So you are ignorant of
the very thing you worship—and this is what
I am going to proclaim to you…’ “

– from Acts 17:17, 22-23 (NIV)

lyrics

LYRICS:
(Paul):
My friends and fellow seekers
I like you have yearned – to search
The great unknowable truths and
Learn all there is to learn

Now I see in this historic place
Where down through all the ages
You’ve honored gods – each has a face
Yet one remains so out of place

So let’s get down
Let’s get down
To cases

"TO A GOD UNKNOWN" – you say
But I proclaim to you this day
This god you claim you do not know
Is known by me – and I can show
How each of you may also know

The God above all others

Yes – He’s been known by many names
In many times – in all domains
And so in time He finally came
That you might recognize
You might recognize
His name

CHORAL VAMP: “To A God Unknown…”

No – we’re not alone
I say He’s not unknown
He’s made Himself known
From high atop His Throne
God Himself has shown
He’s not unknown

(Seeker):
“Hey there – ‘Paul-ey!’ – we’re glad you came
Or should we call you – 'Saul-ey' – as you used to claim
It’s a cryin’ shame that you had to change
Your name’s been your great claim to fame
But then after all – “What’s in a name”
To us it all just seems the same
But tell us truly – why the change
You don’t look or sound the same!”

(Paul):
Yes it’s true – He’s changed my name
But believe me that’s not all He’s changed
The God I preach whom I proclaim
Has sent me here to make it plain
His motive’s neither odd nor strange

He’s pleading with you all
That you exchange upon that wall
